IELTS7.0以上を狙うには英語イディオム（熟語）が必須

IELTSのスピーキング評価基準の語彙力を見ると、バンド6.0までは、特に熟語（イディオム）について明記されていませんが、バンド7.0以上から熟語について書かれています。

つまり、IELTSの元面接官の先生からも再三に渡ってバンド7.0以上を目指すなら熟語をしっかり使うようにと言われたようにバンド7.0を超えるには熟語を織り交ぜるのが条件だということがうかがえます。

バンド7.0　語彙力　熟語
「一般的でない熟語も使用でき、表現や単語同士の組み合わせにも配慮できるが、不適切な選択をする場合もある」

バンド8.0　語彙力　熟語
「不正確さも散見されるが、一般的でない熟語もうまく使いこなすことができる」

バンド9.0　語彙力　熟語
「熟語を自然かつ正確に使用できる」

もちろんバンド9.0の基準のように熟語を自然かつ正確に使用できることを目指したいですが、バンド7.0やバンド8.0では熟語を使ってやや不適切、不正確さがあると書かれているので、まずは、熟語をしっかり覚えて、使ってみることが大事だと思われます。

英語イディオム（熟語）を系統立てて覚える

脈絡なく英語イディオム（熟語）を暗記するより、あるテーマに沿って系統立てて暗記した方が長期記憶に残りやすいということが知られています。これを「関連づけ記憶法」と言います。

〔判断など〕白と黒[善と悪]に割り切った
To take everything into consideration and oversimplify something. To judge everything as either one way or the other, good or bad.

例）Ken always thinks that everything is straightforward, but he doesn’t realize that this matter is not as black and white as he thinks!
訳）ケンはいつも全てを簡単に考えるけれど、この事柄は彼が考えているほど善悪に割り切れないということに彼は気づいていない。

black out
真っ暗になる、証明を消す、失神する
This means to, either darken by putting out or dimming the lights, or to lose consciousness.

例）Because of the huge storm, we had a massive black out here last night, the whole village was out of power for about 10 hours!
訳）大嵐のせいで、昨夜ここ一体が真っ暗になった。村全体が１０時間ぐらい停電だった。

例）Cathy just blacked out during the meeting! She suffers from Parkinson’s disease and has occasionally experienced blackouts.

除外する、追放する
To exclude or ostracise someone socially, reject them

例）The actor has been blackballed ever since that scandal was all over the newspapers. She lost all the television advertising contracts.
訳）その女優はあのスキャンダルが新聞紙上に広まってから追放されてしまった。彼女はテレビコマーシャルの契約を全て失ってしまった。

自分のことを棚に上げて他人を批判する人［こと］

something you say that means people should not criticize someone else for a fault that they have themselves:

例）Paul accused me of being mean. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black!

a person who has done something bad that brings embarrassment or shame to his or her family

To write someone’s name on a list if they break any rules, and ban them from having the opportunity to take part again

例）They were blacklisted because of their bad behavior.

blackmail someone
脅す
To extort or take money from someone by using their secrets against them and threatening to reveal it to others

例）He has been blackmailing me for months with some messages and photos. I need someone to help me stop him!
訳）彼はメッセージや写真を使って私を数か月にわたって脅迫している。彼を辞めさせてくれる誰かが必要です。

as white as a sheet
〔顔色が〕まっさおで、血の気のない
If someone is (as) white as a sheet, their face is very pale, usually because of illness, shock, or fear.

例）John looks as white as a sheet.
訳）ジョンは顔面蒼白です。

raise/have a white flag
降伏する、負けを認める
This indicates that one has accepted defeat and surrenders to the other party

例）He insisted on his opinion and I thought he would never change his mind. I just raised my white flag in the end.
訳）彼は意見を主張し、意見を変えそうになかったので、私は最後に降伏してしまった。

whitewash something
うわべを飾る、ごまかす
to make something bad seem acceptable by hiding the truth

例）The team is trying to whitewash their incompetence.
訳）そのチームは無力さをごまかそうとしている。

white elephant
やっかいなもの、持て余しもの、用済みのもの
something that has cost a lot of money but has no useful purpose

例）My mum bought a new record player for me, but it’s a white elephant. I don’t need it, I don’t even have any records!

white as a ghost
〔痛み、恐れ、ショック、病気などで〕顔面蒼白な
Used to describe someone who is very pale because of pain, fear, shock or illness

例）I didn’t think the movie was that scary, but my sister was as white as a ghost.
訳）私はその映画はそんなに怖いと思わなかったけれど、妹は顔面蒼白になっていた。

a white lie
罪のない嘘
a lie that is about a subject that is not very important, or one that is told to be polite or kind

例）I told you a white lie so you would not be embarrassed.

relating to people who work in offices, doing work that needs mental rather than physical effort
